LLC-Level FEC Scheme in IEEE 802.11 WLAN

چکیده
In this paper, we apply a forward error correction (FEC) technique to the logical link control (LLC) layer in order to improve the reliability of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN). This approach, named LLC-level FEC, makes it possible to implement the robust FEC functionality without modifying the off-the-shelf WLAN hardware. Moreover, a WLAN device implementing our scheme can still maintain the interoperability with legacy devices since a specific field in the LLC/SNAP header is exploited. Two different versions of LLClevel FEC scheme are proposed since some parts of MAC header can be protected further in the LLC layer via a cross-layer approach. Their theoretical error performance is studied based on the bit error probability of the modulation and channel coding schemes of the 802.11a physical layer (PHY). Finally, both analysis and simulation results demonstrate that substantial gain in terms of packet error probability could be obtained. Keywords-802.11, RS coding, logical link control (LLC)

In IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) systems, techniques such as acknowledgement, retransmission and transmission rate adaptation are frame-level mechanisms designed for combating transmission errors. Recently practical sub-frame level schemes, such as frame combining and partial packet recovery, have been proposed by the research community. In this paper, we present experimental results obtained...
متن کاملEfficient Multicast Scheme based on Hybrid ARQ and Busy Tone for Multimedia Traffic in Wireless LANs
Multicast in wireless LANs (Local Area Networks) is very useful for transmitting multimedia traffic from a sender to a group of receivers. The IEEE 802.11 WLAN MAC (Medium Access Control) layer does not support reliable multicast since, for multicast transmissions, it has no control packets such as the RTS, CTS, and ACK, which are used for unicast transmissions. Several protocols have been prop...
متن کاملA Scheme for Supporting Voice over IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network
Along with the widespread use of the Internet has come a considerable increase in the variety of applications being tried out, one of the most promising of which is packet telephony. Meanwhile, with the spread of the wireless local area network (WLAN) environment, there is growing demand for support for real-time traffic over WLAN. In this paper, we propose a modified MAC protocol that supports...
متن کاملStudy of an Adaptive Scheme for Voice Transmission on IP in a Wireless Networking Environment 802.11e
In the recent few years there is a remarkable improvement in the basic IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard because of its intrinsic lack of ability to provide the QoS requirements for the time stringent traffic (stern real-time requirements). The existing 802.11 WLAN standards, even if they can provide high data rates (up to 54 Mbps), do not support the quality of services. The efforts to bring QoS suppo...

IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control(MAC) is proposed to support asynchronous and time bounded delivery of radio data packets in infrastructure and ad hoc networks. The basis of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN MAC protocol is Distributed Coordination Function(DCF), which is a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance(CSMA/CA) with binary slotted exponential back-off scheme. Since IEEE 802.11 MAC...
